SunPower President to Speak, October 19, at Solar Power 2004 Conference in San Francisco

Noted Scientist, Dr. Richard Swanson, Will Discuss SunPower's Technology Development Roadmap For Cost Reduction and Efficiency Improvement

SAN JOSE, Calif., 2004年10月15日 - SunPower Corp., a subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY), announced today that its founder and president, Dr. Richard Swanson, will be presenting at Solar Power 2004, a leading U.S. conference and exposition for residential and commercial solar applications.

Dr. Swanson's presentation, "A Vision for Crystalline Silicon Solar Cells," will be on Tuesday, October 19 at 4:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, San Francisco.   "Silicon solar cells have a practical conversion efficiency limit at around 29 percent," Swanson said.  "Our mass-produced A-300 solar cells have efficiencies exceeding 21%, and we believe we can continue to improve the efficiency going forward."

According to Swanson, increased solar cell efficiency pays dividends along the entire value chain.  In the factory, high efficiency solar cells yield more watts of output for each unit of; capital equipment, silicon wafer "real-estate," labor, and module materials cost.  For customers, high efficiency modules reduce installation expenses and enable a higher capacity solar array to be mounted on a limited roof area.

Dr. Swanson, who will be speaking on the second day of the conference, is a reknowned expert in the photovoltaic arena. During his tenure as a professor at Stanford University, he supervised 14 doctoral students who helped develop the point-contact solar cell architecture that enabled breakthrough advances in silicon solar cell performance.  He received both his bachelors and masters degrees in electrical engineering from Ohio State University and his Ph.D from Stanford University, before establishing SunPower.

About the A-300 Solar Cell

SunPower's A-300 solar cell features a unique, all-back-contact design that maximizes working cell area, hides unsightly wires and simplifies automated production. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) recently measured the A-300 solar cell's power efficiency at an industry-best 21.5 percent; where competing production cells typically measure in the 12- to 15-percent range.  The solar cell's low voltage-temperature coefficient, exceptional low-light performance and high sensitivity to light across the entire solar spectrum enable the A-300 to convert virtually every accessible photon into useable electricity, maximizing annual energy production.

About SunPower

SunPower-a majority-owned subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY)-designs and manufactures high-performance silicon solar cells based on an interdigitated all-back-contact design. The company's initial products were put to use in a variety of high-performance applications, including the NASA-sponsored AeroVironment airplane, "Helios," that flew to a record altitude of 96,863 feet on 2001年8月13日.  SunPower manufactures its high -performance A-300 solar cells in a new facility outside of Manila, the Philippines.  The company currently operates a 25 MW production line there, and is planning to ramp production to more than 100 MW.  For more information on SunPower or solar technology, please visit the SunPower website at
