The mobile handset market has seen the need for High Speed (HS) USB materialize much sooner than anticipated, catching developers off guard and forcing them to add it to existing designs, rather than start from the ground up in future designs. The need for HS USB is driven by consumer features such as music and picture file transfers. In existing designs, Full Speed (FS) USB is used for these transfers, as well as other functions including diagnostics, modem connectivity, and system upgrades. Developing a HS USB path that can handle user file transfers is required to ensure that the user experience is not affected by slow data transfers.

This article describes how developers can introduce HS USB functionality into mobile handsets in stages. In addition, it discusses the pitfalls of designing with a USB switch and how to avoid them. To view more on this topic, visit Electronic Design.
