System designers are now challenged with alternative protocol methods for movement of digital content. Portable Media Player (PMP) hardware manufacturers want to make content mobile; with the restrictions on movement of licensed data, however, they must endure new design challenges.  Digital Rights Management (DRM) and content protection efforts require special protocol considerations.  As a result, Microsoft has recently introduced their Media Transfer Protocol as an alternative to traditional Mass Storage Class for movement of protected classes of content.  This article details market requirments for content protection, provides an in-depth technical comparision between Mass Storage Class and Media Transfer Protocol, and discusses  numerous system level implications and design alternatives for considering use of either, or both, data transfer protocols.
