It's Never Too Late to Add Extra Pins to Your Processor
In an embedded design, even with the best-laid plans, following the strictest processes to a "T", a project can run out of pins on a chosen processor just short of reaching your goal. There is just one more chip select to toggle, one more LED to drive, and the prospect of choosing a different processor with more pins rarely meets an enthusiastc welcome. Even advance planning and design margins won't always get you the pins you want (with spares for safety), because the market (or marketing) drives costs down to the bone. Finishing the design on time with 10 extra pins you fought tooth-and-nail to get approval for will buy you a one-way ticket to next cost-reduction project (if you're lucky).
