The West Bridge family is based on Cypress's Simultaneous Link to Independent Multimedia (SLIM®) architecture that enables three different interfaces (Processor P-port, Storage S-port and USB U-port) to connect to one another.In addition to providing a path to interfaces not supported by the main processor, the SLIM architecture allows direct and independent data transfer from one interface to another, offloading the main CPU, and freeing up its resources for higher system performance.

SLIM Technology

The West Bridge controllers achieve superior data transfer performance by providing a direct path from high-speed USB 2.0 to storage devices such as Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC), Multi Media Card (MMC), Hard Disk Drive (HDD).The West Bridge controllers have a configurable multimedia storage interface and flexible processor interface, easing connections to a broad range of embedded processors and mass storage devices.These features allow West Bridge to connect to any embedded processor or DSP, bringing SD/SDIO/MMC/CE-ATA support to a host of applications including Data Loggers, Wireless Cards, Secure Dongles, Mini RAID controllers, Portable Navigation Devices (PNDs), Data Cards, POS terminals, Portable Media Players (PMPs) and more.

Cypress's Turbo-MTP technology enables users to transfer a feature-length movie between a handheld and PC, in less than a minute - 10x faster than competing Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) implementations.MTP enables transfer of metadata such as song titles, images and Digital Rights Management (DRM) information.Natively supported in Windows Media Player (WMP), MTP enables direct, drag-and-drop synchronization between WMP and a handheld.

The Cypress West Bridge® Turbo-MTP enables a portable media device to achieve USB Mass Storage Class (MSC) multimedia transfer performance while gaining all features and benefits of MTP (Table 1).Turbo-MTP uses the standard USB and MTP protocols but customers can see instantly an up to 17x performance increase over non Turbo-MTP implementations.An application note on the Turbo-MTP module is available at www.cypress.com/go/westbridge.In November 2009, Cypress announced the new Turbo-MTP 2.0, increasing the sideloading performance even further (Table 2).Turbo-MTP 2.0 capabilities can be seen at www.cypress.com/go/tmtp2video.

PCs were going through an evolution in the late 90s as the embedded systems are seeing today.PCs were rapidly adding peripheral ports and functionality.PC processors were finding it tough to keep up with this rapidly changing demand.The solution was to add Bridge devices - called North Bridge and South Bridge that connect to the main PC processor and can evolve rapidly keeping pace with the new requirements.

A similar tread is witnessed today in embedded applications.Phones and other mobile devices are not the same today as they were two years ago.New interfaces, increased storage capacities, support for connectivity options such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth are examples of this evolution.Cypress introduced the West Bridge® device primarily to target these embedded designs, bringing in the same flexibility to the embedded architecture as North and South Bridge did to the PC.
